Steve Danbusky: Executive Director
Danbusky arrived in Virginia Beach in 2003 and started coaching for Beach FC the same year. He began as a staff coach and in late 2004 was elevated to Boys Director of Coaching. He remained in that position until early 2009 when he accepted the role of Executive Director. Danbusky has extensive coaching and playing experience. Originally from New Hyde Park, NY, he grew up playing a high level of club soccer with Albertson Soccer Club and East Islip Soccer Club, where he won 2 state cup titles at u16 and u17, including advancing to Regional Finals and Semi-Finals respectively. After graduating from high school, Danbusky attended Williams College in Massachusetts, a school consistently rated as the top Liberal Arts School in the United States. He graduated from Williams in 1999 with a BA in Psychology.
He was a 4 year starter at Williams and accrued numerous team and individual awards while playing there. Named as Most Valuable First Year Player, he also won the NCAA Div III National Championship in his Freshman year. Williams would return to the Final Four in his senior year and although they didn’t win, Danbusky was named First Team all NESCAC, First Team all Region, and First Team All American. He was also selected the Umbro Senior Select All-Star Game (now called Adidas MLS Combine) in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. He played on the “Elite 16” team, which was comprised of the top 16 seniors in college soccer, regardless of Div I, II, or III, or NAIA.
Danbusky continued his playing career after college where he played for the Long Island Rough Riders from 1999-2001, Connecticut Wolves in 2002, and Virginia Beach Mariners from 2003-2006. He captained the Rough Riders in 2001 and was called up on loan to the New England Revolution and invited to Chicago Fire preseason in early 2002. While in Connecticut in 2002, Danbusky earned numerous awards on a team that lost in the National Semi-Finals of USL 2. He was voted as Team Defender and Player of the Year, along with League Defender of the Year. From there, Danbusky went to Virginia Beach where he played 4 years for the Mariners until the team ceased operations in early 2007. He earned numerous Team of the Week honors in USL 1, as well as being voted Team Defender of the Year in 2005.
Danbusky began his coaching career in NY where he coached with clubs such as Alberston, Syosset, Dix Hills, and Amityville. He moved onto coach for Connecticut Soccer School when playing for the Wolves. He also has had 2 stints coaching in college soccer. He was a volunteer assistant at Adelphi University and an assistant at Western New England College before beginning his tenure at Beach FC.
Danbusky has earned his USSF “A” License and USSF National Youth License. He is a Head Coach of VYSA Southeast District ODP and also on VYSA State ODP staff. He is also on the Virginia Coaching Education Staff and runs F Module, E certificate, and D License courses.
Danbusky lives in Suffolk with his wife Theresa, and 2 sons, Kieran and Grant.
Mark Waite: Boys Travel Director of Coaching
Waite coached for 12 seasons with the ODU Monarchs Men's Soccer team, serving under Head Coach Alan Dawson. He has helped establish a consistently successful program at ODU. A native of Grimsby, England, Waite was one of the top assistant coaches in the CAA and was deemed one of the top 10 Division 1 assistant coaches according to College Soccer News. While under the tutelage of Coach Waite, the Monarchs never finished under .500. They captured the 2007 CAA Championship, three CAA regular season titles, six straight NCAA Tournament appearances, three straight NCAA Tournament second round appearances, and two straight round of 16 appearances. He coached Seven All-Americans, four MLS Drafted Players, three Academic All- Americans, and one Freshman All-American in the last eight years.
Prior to ODU, Waite played for the Hampton Roads Mariners of the USISL from 1994-96. In 1996, he joined the Hershey Wildcats of the A-League and went on to be named the 1998 A-League All-Star Game MVP. Waite also served as assistant men's soccer coach at Virginia Wesleyan College from 1994-96 and then at Bloomsburg University from 1996-98.
In 1992, Waite was named a first team All-American and first team Academic All-American at Lock Haven University. He currently stands as the all-time leading scorer in Lock Haven history with 57 goals and holds the single season record of 25 goals. He was also a two-time PSAC Most Valuable Player. Waite graduated from Lock Haven in 1994 with a bachelor's degree in health sciences and holds a masters degree in communications from Bloomsburg University. While coaching at ODU, Waite established and directed the successful Player Development System (PDS) with AC Norfolk which saw over 300 5-9 year olds develop through his program. He is head coach of the ODP Southeast District 1993 Boys, and holds a USSF `B' coaching license. He currently lives in Virginia Beach with wife Caroline, and his two children, Charlie and Ava.
Karl Greaves: Girls Travel Director of Coaching
Karl Greaves began his coaching career while still a collegiate player at nationally ranked Christopher Newport College. After completing his playing career as a four year starter, All Conference selection, and being named the school's "Most Competitive Athlete" within all sports, Greaves continued his coaching career at the club and high school level.
In 1990 he founded his Grassroots Soccer School which focused on player development and for 12 years he had the opportunity to work with and develop a number of State, Regional, National Youth level and All-American selections. In addition, numerous players under Greaves’ tutelage went on to play in college, mostly at the NCAA Division 1 level. Coach Greaves coached for a season with the CNU women's Soccer team, helping to establish a consistently successful program at the school. During the 2000 season the CNU women's squad won their conference for the first time and qualified for the first time for the NCAA tournament.
Continuing to move forward with the player development mindset, Greaves served as a coach in the Virginia Olympic Development Program. While working with Virginia ODP, Greaves has served as the Southeast District Director of Coaching and as a staff coach for Virginia State teams.
Coach Greaves holds a USSF 'C' coaching license. Since joining the Beach FC Coaching staff in 1995, his teams at Beach FC have been very successful. Greaves' teams have included 1 State champion, 5 State Finalists, 5 State Semi-Finalists, and numerous championships at elite tournaments around the country.
Since taking over as the Director of Coaching for the Beach FC Girls program in 2002, the Club has won two Virginia State Championships, had three finalists and seven semi- finalist. Two players have been selected as Gatorade High Schools Players of the Year, three have been All-Americans, and four have been invited into National youth team events.
The club has been recognized the last two years as the number two club in Virginia in producing collegiate players. Well over 100 players have earned Division 1 college scholarships, two players have been selected as Gatorade Virginia High school Players of The Year, and five have been selected as All-Americans. In addition, with the Beach FC Club there have been several players selected to the National Team pool at the U14 , U17 and U20 level.
Greaves has coached with the Hampton Roads Piranhas in the W-league for one season and with their Super-20 team for two seasons. In both seasons with the U20 Piranhas, 2007 and 2008 the Super-20 Women reached the National Finals. Coach Greaves coaches and motivates players to reach their potential and strive for excellence on and off of the field.
Max Moore: Girls Travel Assistant Director of Coaching
Max Moore began coaching in the mid 1980s which included recreational teams, club and high school teams in Connecticut. After moving to Virginia Beach in 1996, Max began coaching at Beach FC where he coached teams into 6 state finals, wining 2 state championships.
Moore would become the Head Coach at Cape Henry Collegiate where he helped the team win the school’s first girls’ TCIS championship in 2002. Max received the TCIS Coach of the Year in 2002. He would again reach the summit of the TCIS in 2004, recapturing the title for Cape Henry. His success continued at Princess Anne Middle School after winning the first girls’ city Championship and was named Coach of the Year for that achievement. Max also served as the boys Varsity coach at Bishop Sullivan High School in 2005 and led them to a successful season.
Before his coaching career, Max played 4 years at Davis & Elkins College where he was selected 1st Team All Conference. During this time, he would gain enormous experience and insight into the game due to the international contingency that comprised his college team.
During Max’s coaching career he has been fortunate to coach numerous players who took their game to the collegiate level, youth national teams and 2 professionals. Max is currently on the both the Virginia State ODP coaching staff and the Southeast District ODP Coaching Staff. What Max hopes to pass on to the young players he coaches is the love for the game.
Brian Hinkey: Recreation Technical Director
Brian comes to Virginia Beach with a wealth of playing and coaching experience. While a youth player in Ohio, Brian was a member of the Ohio North ODP State team, Region II team, and eventually a U-18 National Pool player. He was also named to the Parade Magazine All-American team as a high school player at Western Reserve Academy.
Brian matriculated to Vanderbilt University where, as a freshman, was third in the nation in assists with 17 and was named the Sun-Belt Conference Freshman player of the year. He then transferred to the College of William and Mary where he co-captained the team his senior year. The three seasons he was there the Tribe made it to the NCAA National Tournament and in 1999 received an automatic bid as CAA Conference Champions. Brian was named the MVP of the Conference Tournament that season. He also received All-State and All South Region honors as a player at William and Mary.
Brian was drafted to the Cleveland Crunch of the MISL and also had stints with the Nashville Metros of the A-League, and the Kansas City Comets of the MISL. During his professional career Brian was considered one of the most technical players with great vision and contributed to an attacking style of soccer with every team he was a part of.
Known for his calm demeanor and creative style, he began his coaching career with Prince William Soccer in Woodbridge, Virginia in 2002. As a coach, Brian has worked with many levels and players. His PWSI 89 Boys team was the most successful as VA State Cup Finalists in 2009 and participants in the Region I Finals. Many of his players from that team are currently playing in the college ranks. While with PWSI, he also coached U9 Boys, U11 Boys, U17 Boys, U14 Girls, and recreational players. He was hired full-time as the Operations Manager for PWSI in 2007. Brian has contributed to player development in the High School ranks with Forest Park HS and with the VA State ODP program as a district and state level coach. Brian holds the USSF National Youth License, NSCAA State Goalkeeping Diploma, NSCAA National Diploma, and the NSCAA Advanced National Diploma. His academic pursuits have included coursework in secondary education from Vanderbilt University, coursework in English Literature from the College of William and Mary, and a Bachelor Degree in Business Administration with a focus in Marketing from Strayer University.
Mercy Akide Udoh: Girls Co-Director of Youth Development (Junior Academy Program)
Widely recognized as the most famous and accomplished women’s player to come out of Africa, Mercy has represented the Nigerian Women’s National Team nearly a hundred times and holds the record for most international goals scored by an African woman player. She represented her country at 3 FIFA Women’s World Cup tournaments, 2 Olympic Games and 3 African Women’s Championship tournaments, racking up an impressive tally of goals and earning the nicknames of 'Merciless Mercy' and then 'Marvellous Mercy'.
Mercy holds a long line of firsts in African Women’s football. She was named the first ever African Woman Player of the Year in 2000, a title she held until 2002. She is also a three-time nominee for FIFA World Player of the Year, the first of any African Woman player and has been a two-time FIFA All Star, another first for an African woman player. As a college football player for Milligan College, Mercy earned NAIA All-American honors, another first for an African player. As a starting striker for the WUSA's San Diego Spirit, Mercy became the first ever African woman player to play professional football.
Mercy is a veteran forward for the Hampton Roads Piranhas, and was named MVP in 2003 when she helped the Piranhas to the W-League title, scoring the Championship-winning goal in over-time.
In 2007, she was named one of only 15 Women Football Ambassadors by FIFA. As a coach, Mercy has been on staff with both the Stars Soccer Academy in Atlanta, GA, and has been with Beach FC since moving back to Virginia Beach in 2008.
Married to award-winning Nigerian football journalist and television analyst Colin Udoh, Mercy lives in Virginia Beach along with daughter Colleen and says working with Beach FC is an exciting challenge. "Football is a part of me and Beach FC is family. Watching these youngsters develop from year to year is an exciting challenge and I am really grateful to be part of such a wonderful organization."
Florence Omagbemi Onuja: Girls Co-Director of Youth Development (Junior Academy Program)
Florence, also known as “Flo," brings a tremendous soccer background and experience to the club. Flo grew up in Nigeria and played college soccer at both the University of Lagos in Nigeria and Milligan College in Tennessee. Flo was a women's world cup player in four FIFA Women's World Cups, serving as Captain for Nigeria. Onuja also represented Nigeria in the 2000 Olympic Games in Australia. She unfortunately missed the Olympic Games in Greece in 2004 due to injury. She is Nigeria’s Most Capped Player. Onuja has also played professionally in the WUSA, with both the Boston Breakers and the San Diego Spirit, and in the W-League with the Hampton Roads Piranhas. Flo holds an NSCAA Advanced National License. She is currently the Head Coach for the U14 Beach FC Piranhas. She was recently appointed assistant coach for the Nigerian U20 Women’s National Team.
Gregg Mottinger: Boys Director of Youth Development (Junior Academy Program)
Mottinger grew up in Carrollton, Texas about 5 miles outside of Dallas. He was a member of the Dallas Comets Youth Soccer Club from 1995-2003 under Coach Horst Bertel. He captained the team, which played in the Coca-Cola Classic first division. Gregg was a member of the North Texas State ODP Team from 1998-2003 and was on the Regional ODP Team in 2002. Gregg attended Newman Smith High School where he was a four year starter on varsity while making 1st Team All-District and 2nd Team All-Region. During his freshman and sophomore year, Gregg participated on the Varsity Swim Team. He also starred as the kicker for the football team all four years including varsity during my junior and senior year. In 2002, Mottinger was selected to play in the Adidas Elite Soccer Program (ESP) at UNCW, where he was scouted by Old Dominion University.
Gregg went on to join the Old Dominion University Monarchs from 2003-2007. He matured and learned the game under the Coaching of Alan Dawson and Mark Waite. Gregg led the team to 4 straight NCAA tournament appearances including making it to the round of 16 in 2006. Mottinger started every game in his four year tenure, eventually serving as captain during his senior year. His experience playing under the coaching staff at ODU helped mold him into the coach that he is today.
In the classroom, Mottinger earned a Bachelor of Science in Health & Physical Education and was awarded his Teaching License in 2007. He teaches 9th grade Health & PE at Lake Taylor High School in Norfolk and coaches the Girls’ varsity soccer team. Mottinger currently holds his USSF National "C" License. He is also on the Southeast District ODP Staff. Gregg’s mother, Janice Mottinger, is a Speech Pathologist on the faculty at the University of Texas at Dallas, and his father, Bill Mottinger, teaches at Freeman Elementary School. He has one older brother, Marc Mottinger, who played college soccer at Southwestern University and currently is head Sales Marketing Rep. for E & J Gallo. Gregg currently resides in Norfolk and is engaged to his fiancé Nicole Crocker. They plan to marry in June 2011. When asked about this new opportunity as the Director of Youth Development with Beach FC, Mottinger replied, “I am extremely excited about starting the next chapter of my life with the Beach FC family. The tremendous support staff and quality coaches are the best in the area and I am eager to get started. I'm excited to start up the Junior Academy program which I know will aid in developing soccer players for the future and give kids the opportunity to reach their true soccer potential.”
John Connelly: Goalkeeping Academy Director
Fall 2010 was Connelly's first season directing the Goalkeeping Academy for Beach FC. John has been fully involved in soccer in the Hampton Roads area for almost 10 years now. He arrived in Norfolk, VA in 2001 attending Old Dominion University. John started all games in the 2004 and 2005 season and led his team to the NCAA College Cup both seasons. During his tenure at Old Dominion, John compiled a 0.96 career Goals Against Average along with 19 career shutouts. Some of the accolades that John received during his career at ODU were AllCAA in 2005, Team MVP 2005, AllVirginia 2nd team 2005, AllCAA tournament team 2005 and Collegesoccernews.com Naitonal Team of the Week 2005. While at ODU, John earned his Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education. He currently teaches Health and Physical Education at Maury High School in Norfolk, VA.
Since John graduated from ODU in 2006, he has been thoroughly involved in coaching in the Hampton Roads area. In 2006, John joined Virginia Wesleyan College as their goalkeeper coach. After one season at VWC, John went back to his Alma mater to join ODU as their goalkeeper coach in 2007 and has been there since. Starting in 2008, John has been running the Connelly Goalkeeping Academy in the Virginia Beach area. He has also served as the part of the staff of the Adin Brown Goalkeeping Academy. In 2008, John started working as the Southeastern District ODP Goalkeeper Coach. He has held the position of Goalkeeping Director for AC Norfolk for one season and has been working with multiple goalkeepers in the area. He currently holds his USSF "D" license and has worked with a wide range of keepers ranging from U10 all the way to MLS keepers. John currently resides in Virginia Beach with his fiance Tyler.
Lisa Hill: Travel Office Manager
Lisa Hill began her tenure at Beach FC as a club registrar and team manager in June of 2004 when her oldest son joined the club. In April of 2005, Lisa was hired as a part-time office assistant to execute the administrative duties of the travel soccer program and quickly became an integral part of the Beach FC team. Lisa has worked her way into the role of Travel Office Manager and performs a multitude of administration roles including Tryout Registration and Logistics, VYSA Team Roster Registration and Maintenance, Webmaster, Sand Soccer Committee Representative, and Co-Liaison for Team Managers and Treasurers. She is involved in every aspect of the administration of Beach FC, much of which is done behind the scenes. Lisa and her husband David reside in Virginia Beach and have 2 sons, Aaron and Matthew.
Debra Anderson: Travel Office Administrator
Debra started with Beach FC as a key volunteer when her daughter began playing for the club in 2003. She then became a team manager two years later and has continued to volunteer for numerous tournaments and events. When hired as part of the administrative staff, she quickly brought a level of organization and work ethic that helped the operational side of the club immensely. She is the administrative coordinator for the US Club Soccer Southeast Regional League (Summer League) and Beach FC Golf Tournament Coordinator. She has also helped launch Beach FC's spirit wear program along with working on a number of special projects, such as creating and updating team manager/team treasurer handbooks, camps, and tryouts. Debra lives in Virginia Beach with her husband John and daughter Elizabeth.
Chris Crews: Recreation Office Administrator
Chris was raised and attended primary school in Washington, Pennsylvania. After graduating from Washington High School in 1982, she joined the United States Marines. In 1987, Chris married Chuck Crews and moved to Virginia Beach. While living at the beach in 1989 with their four young children; she saw an advertisement that read “Neighborhood Youth Soccer League – We Play for the Fun of It”. She promptly enrolled her children into youth soccer with NYSL.
In 1991 she volunteered as an Age Group Coordinator with the league. Later that year, she was voted onto the NYSL Board of Directors as the Secretary. A couple soccer seasons later, and she was voted to become Vice President of Administration. She served as a voting Board member from 1993 to 1998.
In 1998, Chris left the Board to make a military move to the Washington, DC area with her husband. However, upon returning to Virginia Beach in late 2000 she returned to her association with NYSL. She volunteered with the league until 2004 when she was hired to become NYSL’s Office Administrator. In 2008, Chris accepted the position as Referee Assignor for NYSL's recreation program. She arranges the training sessions for non-certified referees and works closely with the referee assessors. From 1989 to the present, Chris has had five children and her grandson play soccer with this league. Chris remains dedicated to ensure that our players still PLAY FOR THE FUN OF IT!
Dennis Blackmore: Beach FC Director of Tournaments
Blackmore began his tenure with Beach FC as a coach in 1986, then the Virginia Beach Select Soccer Association. He continued to be a coach and served on the board of directors with the club through 1997. During his coaching career his team captured the Virginia State Championship and went on to be a semi-finalist in Region 1 competition. In 1997 Blackmore became the club's first executive director intimately involved with hiring of coaches, staff, fields development, HRSC board member, budget, and managing the club's tournaments. In 2005, Blackmore stepped down as Executive Director and assumed the duties of Director of Tournaments where he now manages the Virginia Beach Spring Classic, Sun Cup, and Columbus Day events.
Blackmore is a retired Naval Officer, holds the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Advanced National Diploma, Bachelors Degree from Southern Illinois Univ (Carbondale), Masters of Education from Old Dominion University, Service Disabled Veteran Business Owner, and currently a REALTOR®.
Blackmore and his wife Mary Jo reside in Virginia Beach and have six sons: Eric, Bryan, Andrew, Dylan, Tyler, Bryce, and two grandchildren: Mikey and Ryley. All sons were/are players with Beach FC.
